New Year Resolutions

It’s July - can’t think of a better time
to get my New year’s resolutions going...
plenty of lead way, seems safe enough.

So, I start with the money thing.
I need to save more, spend less:
That seems a pretty good start.

Along with that, I can tie in a diet:
Save money, lose a few pounds –
nothing wrong with that either.

There’s the drinking thing too,
and the gambling and the smoking:
Wow, I can tie em all under savings.

I was just beginning to feel good:
all those wonderful resolutions
and a safe six months to start!

“You idiot!” I thought I heard someone say:
“Don’t you see, even if you try
you won’t get to first base with it?

No one can make “resolutions” –
they just create new patterns of “revolutions” –
round and round they go, and so will you.

Nothing will change, or stop or end:
you’ll be again where you left off
when you fall off your wagon.

So many people live their silly lives
as if riding a donkey tied to a post
walking around and around and around.

This would be laughable
if it was done for fun and laughter,
but this is serious mindlessness.”

I didn't laugh. I think that it was very serious talking. and very good poem.
