Moved from a shack to a barn

Is this the beginning, Maggie?
Of the end, I mean

I never saw myself as an icon
Never desired it

I merely accepted it as part of the job
Especially after that Moore fellows’ poem
And Nast’s colorful caricature

People have forgotten that my egress
Into their homes was never down the chimney
A dubious operation, at best

Even with imaginary magical powders, and one
Not the most desperate of jimmylocks
Would consider

Few, now, remember my entrance has always
Been an open and receptive heart

And that red suit they have me wearing

Maggie? Can you picture me wearing red velvet
And trimmed in ermine, to boot

I’m fading, you know

Even as their image of me becomes ubiquitous
I am diluted, no longer a metaphor

I am a lost concept, an idea barely grasped

Made into a taskmaster of elves
And drover of reindeer,

And now, they’ve decided a figure never seen
A figure, they themselves, have diminished

Is far too fat

Oh, no, sir...

we do not forget...

and may you never grow so thin
as to fade in our eyes, ever....

Sounds like Santa and Jesus have a bit more in common than previously.  Happy New Year.

*laughing*

You write so real, even when it's surreal, and I miss writing with you, too. There is no posturing with you--you remain the natural poet, and I find myself wishing you had a column so I could just read your musings on the topics of the day.

I miss you very much Ed.

Ho Ho...and a new year too.

Weight has become too much of an obsession in this country.  And to go after Santa...

I saw your name and could not possibly pass up the opportunity to read one of yours, wranx.  You never ever disappoint me with your keen observations on the things most of us take for granted.  I especially liked the lines about Nicholas' entrance -- through the heart.  Bravo!  And, Happy 2008 to you, sir!

Nice...they say that the original Santa Claus was not fat, until Coca Coca decided to fatten him up and make him Jolly St. Nick...so perhaps the time has come to return to the original Santa...James

Glad that I stopped in - I am laughing and thinking that, while amusing, the truth of it all is just sad.

Were we always so shallow?  Probably.
