Homeless Words

My poem sucked no matter how I writ it
Nothing could fix it
I pondered and wondered and threw it away
I’ll try again today
I knocked my head and chewed my pen
Well, I woulda done that way back when
Now I strike my keys

Infuriatingly

‘Cause my poem sucked and I couldn’t fix it
- No matter how I writ it.

If the actual truth were to be told,
No ideas took hold
They flitted like swallows enjoying the rain
Scattering in my brain
Evaporating into empty yawning space
Words with no place
To call home

Fun write.
But a wordless home
would totally suck!

Oh Yeah... I think
they have a home all right... but
our problem is that home is caught
in your sleeping head...

so wake up and spit out a few more...lol
(please don't take my muse, you're all I have)

what a slice of "every-poet's-life" dejavu!

I absolutely LOVE:

"ideas...
flitt(ing) like swallows enjoying the rain...";

AND:

"Words with no place
To call home"

Applause!

John,

How you made me smile -- thank you for understanding.

Happy New Year,
Alison

Midnitesun darlin'

I think homes always have words.  I am just not sure that the words all move in at the same time.  Know what I mean?

Thank you for enjoying.  Happy New Year.

Dale,

Maybe sometimes we are all just Rip Van Winkle's trying to wake up - creativity does kind of take a snooze now and then, doesn't it.

Happy New Year.

Bruce,

Thank you, my friend.  It's always wonderful to see that you have stopped in to share your thoughts.  I treasure your words - and you have a fan in me.

Happy New Year.

This is so true and that's just where I'm at
this point in time. I think there's too much going on right now, can't concentrate.

This brought some thoughts from a book that I am reading...the book is Poets' Corner, compiled by John Lithgow, anyway here are some interesting thoughts from a dead poet that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1948...
"Why do you want to write poetry?" if the young man answers, "I have important things I want to say," then he is not a poet.  If he answers, "I like hanging around words listening to what they say," then maybe he is going to be a poet...W.H. Auden.

Homeless words are a valuable resource for
other poems at other times, but you know that.
Yes, frustrating when it doesn't come together, I hear ya'.

Your poem sucks,
or so you say,
it can't be fixed
in any way?

What is it
that you find so wrong?
The way the words
are strung along?

Or is it meter
or the rhyme
or just the order
in each line?

Maybe you think
the meaning's lost
and can't be found
at any cost.

Is it your muse
who's gone away
and left you
on your own today?

A poet's lot's
a woeful tale
when inspiration
won't prevail.

But poets know
they have to write,
even if their words
are trite.

And even when
they've nought to say,
their pen will still
dictate their way

So write your lines
so all can see
how nothing
becomes poetry!

So true and I really appreciate you reminding me of this from time to time.  You always reassure me when I think the words are gone for good.

LeeJ,

Oh my God, you are so right.  Instant coffee is a sin.  Espeically with dried creamer from those little packets.

Thank you - you truly understand and I will be looking for your poem.

James,

What a lovely gift you dropped by.

"Why do you want to write poetry?" if the young man answers, "I have important things I want to say," then he is not a poet.  If he answers, "I like hanging around words listening to what they say," then maybe he is going to be a poet...W.H. Auden.

Thank you,

Kahlil,

I miss you when you are gone too long.  Such a special response - and so true.  You make me smile while you make me think.  I love that.

Magnus,

It's a disease that I hope we all are recovering from.  Thank you for dropping by - it's a pleasure to read your words.
