highways are empty shoes
upside down under the sky
legless laying like sleeping dogs
that have run too long
but never found a master

old iron still is loyal
perhaps our blood is the same
oil and metal, stone and water
hard to find the seams
if one goes fast enough

there are windows like trees
on both sides of my mind
I move past them quicker now
lest I recognize a lover
or hater from another time

or lest I am recognized
as the shadow of a shadow
something passing in the night
that leaves fingerprints
and the need for fingers

that touch lips before the shhhhh

It never fails that your words
bring me home to 101...

And sometimes, just the road of 1.

Merry Christmas, D.

"highways are empty shoes

~ I find it curious that I have not ever regarded roads as such! lol Your mind sees beyond the mundane and obvious.

"or lest I am recognized
as the shadow of a shadow
something passing in the night
that leaves fingerprints
and the need for fingers

that touch lips before the shhhhh"

~ and"

~ The closing lines ain't half bad, either!

Oh, excellent!  This one is more accessible than many of yours, and just as full of image and meaning.  Well done.

and leave enough mystery
to keep them wondering
who you really were

It's hard to find the seams in river ice also if one races over it fast enough - sometimes sailing over open water, cold brushing the skin (if any is exposed), unrecognizable but so recognized.

I felt this one.
