Lumpy Oatmeal makes me Crazy!

Silence surrounds snow-laced birch trees
Frozen ice fog kisses as eyelashes peek
A lone raven flies, food in his beak
Into still air, no breath of breeze –
How does he not freeze?

Hoarfrost covers lights suspended in air
Icy quiet creates a feeling of peace
Milk yellow sun hangs just out of reach
Offering no warmth to share –
It appears to float there.

The world is surreal at minus forty below
Sounds muted by deep, piercing cold
The song of Raven wings, defiant and bold
In the deep cold everything slows –
There’s nowhere to go

There’s simply nowhere to go.

What a beautiful poem, Alison but where do you live? 40 below?

It was as if all life was frozen and suspended in time ~ Except for the raven! It is beyond me how its bare feet would not freeze at such a sub-zero temp! Perhaps some creatures have antifreeze in their veins.

Alison, I commend you on this "surreal" penning! Exquisite!

Giving you an extra-warm, hug!

the kind of silence snow brings is awesome...I like to watch it fall, and I like how quiet it gets.
Other than that? I'll take rain any day of the week..

oh and seeing D in a speedo and uggs?! That would be the coolest   lol

Ida

Thank you.  I am in Alaska - it's not always this cold, but it does happen.  Merry Christmas.

Do you have an inkling how much you give me with your poetry and responses?  The ravens are truly amazing here.  They fluff up so big and are all frosted over sometimes.  They are amazing and if I can get a good picture sometime, I'll post it for you.

Merry Christmas and love,
Alison

I love that kind of snow too - and I love stormy, rainy days on the beach.  When no one else ventures out.

Ali, this is beautifully written, the visuals I got from your write were just breathtaking sweetie and actually did give me a chilly shiver just thinking about 40 below. I have to go turn the heat up now!

I love you, have a wonderful Christmas

Sheli,

Some one has to try to chill that hot blood that courses through your veins!  May as well be me (as your friend, of course).

Merry Christmas. I love you.

You never fail to bring a smile to my face -you are a light on these blue pages and without you here - well, it would be a more dim place to visit.

Thank you for all your special replies - and, darlin', it IS the Arctic.  We are about a hundred miles south of the Arctic Circle.

Merry Christmas.

No, there is nowhere to go!!
I once felt the -20° Celsius in Switzerland and could hardly breathe ... it's incredible, icicles under the nose!! Walking slowly wasn't the option, only running could keep us going ...
Wonderful write, dear Alison!
The stillness IS the positive side of it.
Love and warm hugs.
