In an upside-down garden

She does not know
it was her photograph
the one she took-

And I know
exactly where she sat, when she
looked over at him,
grinning behind her camera lens.

The flash was off.

It had to be, to capture
him so perfectly, sitting,
profile and slightly hidden
by the couch I dream of now
where I'd kick off my socks
so the dog could lick my toes-

He wrapped me in a flowered sheet
and I wonder,
did he do that for her, too?

She does not know
he told me about it
although my imagination
had already run away,
married the two of them
in some kind of strange dance
like a ritual calling for rain

Or, something.

I remember now, her giggling
always so giddy for his words-

Just like me.

And I'm wondering,
did she try to touch his hand?
does she know,
our thumbs match.
We finish each other's sentences.

We dance.

It was HER
picture-
the portrait of him
this photograph of a man
reading, glancing over
and the way his fingers bent
the angle of his thumb
holding back the pages,
that convinced me it was time to go.

The lighting of the apartment
the large window behind him
with the blinds he likes to draw,
pulled back to fill the room
and that couch,
and his eyes-

She does not know
that he looks at me
Different

And I didn't see it until now
looking at this photograph
the warmness of his eyes,
the way I remember him,
it's lost here,
in her frame.

For a minute
I forget
that we are two different people
she and I

wondering,
does she know the curve of his spine
has she watched him shampoo his hair
counting the freckles on his skin
kissing his back as he sleeps.

I know that
she can't remember
laying on the couch with him
or the way he entwines his fingers in mine
singing along with the songs on the radio
watching his eyes fill up with tears-

These memories are mine, my photographs.

Allysa...

This took my breath away...
as though I was there,
the photographer,
the one who wanted
what you had.

Very well done...you should make
every attempt to publish this one,
please.

Merry Christmas, my friend.
