Where I Come From

the smell of honeysuckle thick on the vine
dancing white shirts tightly tied to a line
old dirt roads stirred up by pickup trucks
thin cotton dresses, crinoline slips, patent leather deluxe
birth place of Elvis, dixie, the delta and more
fried green tomatoes, debris littered hurricane shores
muddy thick rivers echoing with Indian names
misunderstanding the joy of difference and still holding blame
clear passionate notes from a Baptist choir
a magnolia moon that dips low and hangs higher
punishment switches torn from a peach tree
ham, red eye gravy, grits, biscuits, nectar from a bee
hours alone playing on a green blanket of clover
watching june bugs and the kudzu taking over
pecan pies wait next to pralines on wax paper
good mannered houses are clean and smell of pine vapor
silent night crushes velvet to wish on a star
in darkness lightening bugs blink captured in a jar
in the fields corn, soybeans, and cotton spin row after row
more than one lesson learned from momma reaping what you sow

"no darkness has ever been deep enough to extinguish my personal knowledge of love"  Anne Rice

Thank you for taking me to this incredibly beautiful place.  Your images are spectacular.

An outstanding poem.

I think I have to go back for another read.

grand-fine imagery...wonderful capturing of
'formative influences' in response to the
'poetic challenge!'...one of the very best
of these 'writes!'...

My Mississippi Queen...

I knew this was going to be better than chicken fried steak and white gravy.

Love you, lovelyone!

You packed one heckuvvalot of sights, smells, thoughts, feelings, images, and memories into the telling of where you came from. ~ and I enjoyed every single one of them!

I am from northern Ontario and the south that you painted was how I always imagined it to be.

An absolutely wonderful penning! Engaging and a very pleasant read.

Hugs to you, Southern Gal!

You explained almost exactly how/where I grew up...I always knew Indiana was a southern state!
