"First Vermont Winter"

I feel so cold right now, I’m imagining
the bacteria inside my body building tiny
snowmen on my bones.  Complete with
scarves and top hats, the Frosty men are
sturdy, as blood cells pass like winter clouds
above their heads.  I need a heater.  I need
a tin-can phone that reaches from here to
the sun, so I can call up and request some
extra warmth this time of year.  If it costs
a little more, I can put it on a credit card.
Or, perhaps the sun is nice enough to put
a piece of fire in my pocket.  Like a bearded
man collecting change from passing vehicles,
I need all the blankets I can get right now,
even if they do resemble tissues.

I am freezing.  I grew up in the desert and
made friends with many cacti.  At present,
I feel like a naked lizard trying to ice-skate
in Antarctica, remembering a home where
excessive cold is relegated to the soda, the
moon, and a pint of chocolate ice cream.

Smiling at this. As a native Californian, later transplanted to the midwest, I can tell you the difference between a wet cold and a dry cold...

and it's a bone-shattering one!

Enjoyed this, Monk.

I was already feeling the cold up here in the Great White North, but you now have my teeth chattering! I think that you and I could use a nice steaming cup of hot chocolate right now! ~ My treat!

What an imagination you have! ~ Or perhaps what you described going on in your body is true! Egads! That means that I could have little "Frosty Men" in my body as well! Oh, my! lol

Loved the write!

Giving you an extra warm hug ~ you need it!

I like this lots.  We have already been down to -30 and have too little snow so far this year.  It's a dry cold here - not as much wind as the lower part of the state where I grew up - humid, windy, tons of snow (but the thermometer always said it was warmer than here - HA!).  I am winter girl so I really enjoyed your write here.

Good luck in that Vermont winter.

Trust me my friends, snow on Christmas makes it all worth while. After that, well it's just too damned cold. Nice piece

I laughed out loud when I read your poem. After this first winter you will come to love the cold and snow.

Today the sun is shining and you won't need that tin-can phone. If she's not in VT, call me and I'll send some over from NH!
