The Magician When I was a scruffy kid, I used to pretend I was a great magician. I had a plastic wand and a black top hat that swallowed half my head. A bag of tricks and magic books that always emphasized the effectiveness of patter. I have never forgotten this. I have never forgotten how my experience in learning magic taught me that a well-planned out illusion can cause an audience to crumble with amazement. I’m pretty sure this is how I decided that I would become a writer. I love being in the center of the stage. I love to wave my pen and see a rabbit leaping from a puff of smoke. I love to incite tears and laughter, using words to saw my closest friends in half. I love to disappear behind the screen of deep abstraction and then reveal myself in shining robes of metaphors. Yes, I write because I am an egocentric magician with a smile hiding secrets not even my assistants will anticipate. |
