Davy Jone’s Locker
by Linda L. Dowd

Lashed by winds, I sailed tempestuous seas,
with an iron-clad grip on helm wheel.
Nor’westers were blasting and flanking all sides,
~ Ship was aimless without compass or keel.

Towering waves crashed o’er the gunnels,
~ spinning whaler in unending turn.
Buffeted by seas and gale-force winds,
I knew not the ship’s bow from its stern.

The vessel did list and slipped into the sea,
~ I was headed for a watery grave
Deeper, and deeper, ~ and deeper, I sank,
to be greeted by the sea devil, Dave.

He had rows of teeth and sinister eyes,
and tentacles wriggling ‘round head.
One swift blow from his mighty, horned tail,
and forthwith, his victims, were dead.

In booming voice, he proclaimed me his own,
~ Waters churned in the wake of his roar.
My soul was his to the far reaches of time,
~ And I feared what might lie in store.

Shipwrecks were scattered along ocean floor,
~ All about, lay gold pieces and bones.
Drunk sailors ‘n pirates had met their fate,
in the Locker of ole Davy Jones.

He presides o’er lost souls in the ocean
~ Each storm bringing flock to his fold.
Sea-farers dare not mention his name,
for misfortune would befall the so bold.

As I sought an escape from the sepulchre,
I did spot a gold skeleton key.
~ Festooned with jewels ~ ever so rare,
it sparkled on the floor of the sea.

It opened the gates to fair Fiddler’s Green,
where spirits of good sailors, roam free.
Legends do tell ~ that to escape from sea hell,
one must find the Fiddler’s jewelled key

.
Whilst 'greeting' his next wretched victims,
~ new members for Davy’s ghoul crew,
I scooped up the key with a sleight-of-hand,
and pocketed it and hid it from view.

I searched for the legendary gateway,
that would lead me to good sailors’ heaven.
I spotted a door, ‘twixt two sunken ships,
from which hung a lucky, brass seven!

I wended my way past circling sharks,
stepping o’er scattered bones ‘n debris.
Anchors once raised with a “Ship ahoy, mate!”
were now buried in the bed of the sea.

As I reached the gate, I pulled out the key,
~ Then heard a demoniacal roar.
I was wracked with fear and shaking so bad,
That I dropped Fiddler's key to sea floor.

With a trembling hand, I swept up the key,
then inserted it into the lock.
I swung the door wide ~ and rushed inside,
then against it, I shoved a big rock.

I stepped into a gray, misty tunnel
with a glowing, soft light at far end
Each step I made, took me further away
From the roar of Davy’s abellerin’.

As I neared the lit end of the tunnel,
sweet grasses added freshness to air.
I was filled with rapt anticipation,
at whatever might lie beyond there.

An Eden lay resplendent, before me.
~ The fairest meadows that I’d e’er seen.
I had found the good sailors’ heaven,
I had arrived at fair Fiddler’s Green.

This is a rollicking good verse. The metre is like a rolling sea with only a few wave crashes to mar the sound.

Kethry ~

"The metre is like a rolling sea with only a few wave crashes to mar the sound."

Aye, there's the rub ~ those blasted "wave crashes"! lol

In all honesty, this was a "b" to write. I'd work on a stanza and think that I finally got it right ~ but then I'd go back and read it again and it was really rough! ~ I guess that was from the high seas! lol

Thanks for reading and for your comment ~ I always enjoy your bit of humour added in for good measure!

Hey ho!
