in the shadows

Like a Carny rider on an old dirt bike
tricked out to run the boards,
around around around again
around the Wall of Death,
Brother Death
who wraps my dreams and memories,
asks why I no longer come out to play,
tries to steal my breath when I sleep too deeply
too raw from the clarity
too exposed to the living
who circle
around around around again,
waiting
always waiting....

For more than one poet,
devoted to living
despite the knowing,
poetry is one place
with feelings emoted,
without thoughts of surviving
the soft understanding
that life's meaning
was simple to learn.

...but I preach
when I don't mean to preach,
I hurt
when I don't mean to hurt those around me,
around around around again;
there is no end,
a hall of mirrors
images curving back
to the welcome mists
to the beginning of life itself,
lessons postponed
yearning forward
into oblivion,
disappearing,
visions curving back into the abyss,
around around around again....

"too raw from the clarity
too exposed to the living"

*nod*   sadly yes.

Some days it seems the mere whisp of a breeze rubs raw the clarity and understanding.

You give grip sometimes for those slipping..
you give truth in an otherwise dishonest world.

Beautifully described. I was with you when I read it...and see the place in life you take. True things disappear...but words can be always.

around around and around again---and what we mean and what me don't mean, what does it matter in the end? If there is an end, and not just the round.
