One Sunday afternoon, It happened.
I saw someone, someone from my past,
someone I wanted to forget.

I knew him, yet I hesitated.

He gave me a hug,
A familiar embrace that yielded my strength
and gave way for my emotions.
The ones I kept hidden.

He stood there, in his familiar stance
and his eyes sparkled
as he looked me up then down.
He moistened his lips in a way that
let me know that he was more than
happy to see me.

We stood there in the afternoon rain
and I listened as he spoke of yesterday
and how he remembered it.
The version he knew; the one he believed.

I stayed quiet as he spoke and nodded
my head when appropriate.
My hair was getting damp
and the entrance to my exit
was at arms length yet I couldn't move.

He held secrets that were ready for release.
He wanted approval and to free himself
from the guilt he carried all these years.
But I wanted nothing to do with it
or him.

I was over that part of my life.
He wanted forgiveness
that I had already given him long ago
and I had forgotten them just the same.

The rain trickled away the time and
his words fell like droplets
to the ground where we stood
as he attempted to merge with me
like a puddle to a pond.

Anticipation grew as I looked
beyond him to the place I was going
a place he had left.
He had held me back before and
I wasn't going to let that happen again.

He asked if he could call me and
if he could have a second chance.
He loved me now. He didn't know it then.
He waited for a response.

I'm at a place now where I am not ashamed
Of who I am or who I've become.
I'm strong enough to say that I won't go back.
And so it was said.

I watched him as he walked away.

"One Sunday Afternoon" to remember with a smile ~ and then to forget.

You are a strong, self-realized woman! ~ Walking into the future and not into the past!

a Sunday afternoon...

I've had one of those...

only I did give them a 2nd chance and we are good friends now, but it took awhile for me to get there from where he left me.

Very nice work especially with the rain.

Earth Angel,
Thank you for your comments. Walking to the future is a constant goal.  It doesn't help when the past comes back to haunt me.

James,  Thanks so much.

Susan,
Thank you so much for reading and commenting.  You don't know how I considered giving him another chance, but the past was best left in the past with him in it.

Thanks very much to everyone.
Naome
