Sons of America

Once we were friends, but something,
(I don’t remember what)
made us drift apart.  Well, we chose that
- to drift apart.
Tonight, she hugged me and said,
“I wish we were still friends like we were.”
“We are,” I replied.  “We really always have been.”
She is strong, yet fragile.  Small in her largeness,
her hair is freshly cut and her eyes are swollen.
Yet, she wears her brave face as if it came from Cover Girl,
and I know that her face will wash off
in the tears of the shower.
Her partner is there
– how nice to see you again, we murmured.
Her aunts and cousin and friends I don’t know.

Her son is there too.  He just arrived home
and the flag is large as it drapes his coffin.
The red and white are dramatic
in the muted colors of the room.

I didn’t think I’d cry, but I did when a soldier,
with crutches in both hands, limped to the front of the room.
He bowed his head and had a moment with one he knew
like few of us will ever know another.
All the clichés wove together and, you know,
they truly are the sons of America.

Very touching Alison, I would have cried too. At least you were there to tell their story and you did it very well.
