Dawn shatters night blackness, raining dark against dark,
over the warmth of covers that muffle the chill,
casting shadows on bright squares of a quilted garden.

Dried snowflakes, robbed of moisture, drift slowly,
       dancing in air currents,
only to fall into immobility, paralyzed  by winter’s cruel reality.

                 and I?

I look to the frosted window and see your face
as the heat of your breath makes holes for eyes
intently gazing into the hollows of my soul.
