I’m trying to write of birds…
Something about the way they move,
or maybe just to give them voice.
I don’t know,
but always they bring thoughts of you.

And I know how you dream with wings –
how you want to float on these warm winds,
fly away from the place
where you still fear that cancer sleeps within you.
Leave a light on because darkness
brings thoughts of the dark.

To you, this body is more fragile
than a birds hollow bones and tiny,
gentle wings.
To you, this earth is ruthless.
And you don’t know we stand back,
watching every move, hearing every word,
and we awe at your grace.

To us, you already fly

Hupomeno.

GG,

I rarely have a chance to visit anymore, so it was especially a treat to see your writing.   I think you're one of my favorite poets, even among the old masters.  Your poetry is so real and consuming.  The haunting mystery, you've described so delicately and eloquently.  We love you here and wish you the best!   Did I say I'm saving this beaut (one of your greatest, I think)  You soar, Miss GG!  You soar!

I think you are a brilliant poetess!   luv and hugs,

miscellanea

Alyssa,
Well I'm tempted to scold and then you go and write such a precious gift that I stand in silence shamed that I was thinking about me instead... So you see you make it easy to shift quickly to my feelings of relief at knowing you are okay and behaving like yourself. You have been dearly missed. Welcome back.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

GG!!!!  Like Miscellanea, I'm not here very much due to, well, lots of work mostly...but I do peek in now and then and wow, it is so good to see you posting again.  You have been missed.

Your writing is so exceptional and this one, in particular, is so very touching.  The person you wrote this for must have been very overwhelmed.  What a gift!  *hugs*....jo

jwesley,
in awe? wow. thank you so much!

serenity,
the funny thing is that I don't even like birds. A couple people and I were giving eachother a poetry assignment each week, this particular week someone chose birds as the topic. I complained! Then somehow made a poem about birds into a poem about cancer... whodathunk lol. I look forward to reading you again.

EA,
yep, I'm back! I finally got the internet again. It's good to be home. Thank you for the welcome and reply

jo,
heya! I hope you're not working too hard. These blue pages need you. Thank you, it's great to hear from you. Oh and actually I never gave this to the lady it is about... not much good at giving people my poetry. But she knows I love her! Take care.

Alyssa, I had almost dried my tears after reading Kacy's Willow Whisperings, and then they started all over again with this beautiful poem of yours.  (Thank you for reading my Behind the Smiles.  With regard to my reply to you there, I see you aren't the Alyssa I thought you were, but nevertheless, another lovely one whom I don't know yet, but have already started to get to know.)

PLEASE, in spite of what you said, PLEASE give this poem to the person you wrote about.  In spite of her knowing you love her, she will benefit far more than you know, from receiving this.  PLEASE.

Thank your for the reply, Alyssa.  Don't worry about the tears.  They were healing prayers.

Thank you for considering giving your friend the poem.  I understand that I don't know anything like the full circumstances, and I don't want you to feel bad in any way, but I firmly believe that the gift of enrichment, release, relief, compassion, human consolation and healing of the spirit and, to a degree, of the body, and certainly to some of the physical pain, will outweigh any costs to either of you or anyone else concerned.

If you do give it to her, and you regret it, pin the blame on me and let me have the full blast of your anger!

Owl,
thank you. I know it certainly couldn't do any harm. And though, thank God, I've never experienced cancer, I do know well what illness is like. I also know the sweetness it brings when someone steps beyond their comfort zone to comfort me. I'm just not so sure its something I'm willing to do, this time. But maybe. I'm still thinking. Thank you for encouraging me to step beyond my comfort zone. Be well!

Alyssa, thank you for keeping on considering it.  I understand that once you have done it, you can't go back.  However, I believe that you won't regret it, especially knowing what soul-happiness, etc it can bring.

Hi GG,
Your poem touched me deeply. My daughter died from cancer in 2000. She was 34. When she was very ill I gave her this littte verse by Victor Hugo.

Be like the bird, who
halting in his flight
On a limb too slight
Feels it give way beneath him.
Yet sings
Knowing he hath wings.

I think it gave us both some comfort.

To give a bird voice... to hear them sing before the dawn, knowing full well it is coming...to have the grace of wings...

I've wished these things.  Your poem is lovely.  ~ Karen
