            With a single malt

            The first arctic nor'wester
            cools this darkened November house
            scratches redbud branches
            against the cat's window and
            keeps night-chaired ears perked

            While I am softly backlit
            in this old blue couch
I sip at a shot of Loch Morar
having read and savored pages of
            Ted Kooser's "Delights & Shadows"

            In a green fleece hood
            I keep just warm
as I sit in a dozing chill and wish
for reasons only she could know
that I didn't need to write this.
