Artist: John William Waterhouse

Cloak of Midnite Raven
~ Linda L. Dowd ~

Steeped in depths of deepest sorrow,
Pains of others she did borrow;
Wrapped in cloak of midnite raven,
Waiting for sun's rise on morrow.

Wrapped in cloak of midnite raven,
Mind in flood with image graven;
A glint of hope does pierce her night,
With pale glimpse of peaceful haven.

A glint of hope does pierce her night,
With rising sun's pre-dawning light;
The inner embers start to glow,
As soul leaves dark in angel flight.

Steeped in depths of deepest sorrow,
Pains of others she did borrow;
Wrapped in cloak of midnite raven,
Waiting for sun's rise on morrow.

Lovely, Linda!  I know about "borrowing" the pains of others.  It's called empathy and sometimes one wishes it had an off switch.

Fine poetic recipe here, darlin'.

A longing in velvet darkness. And Waterhouse is a favorite.

Cheers sweet lady,

Being an empath certainly can have its drawbacks! It's great for others, but hard on us!

Hi, Regina!

As I may have mentioned to you before, whenever I see your name, I say "rosewood" to myself. I know your name is Regina, but to me, you're rosewood! lol

Thank you very much for the kind and lovely reply. It was a pleasure to read!

Linda...Intriguing write, makes me want more. This sounds like it could turn into one of your classic epic story poems, ( I'm sure you know what I mean by epic )
Enjoyed very much and waiting for more...Paul

Yes, I do know what you mean by an "epic", my dear man! Whenever I think of that 'epic' poem of mine, your smiling face appears before my eyes!

This was a lovely reply and I thank you for it. You have also planted a seed in my mind! lol

Oh, but that would never do! I would not ever want you to "feel the scratch of borrowed pain"!!! ~ but knowing you as I do through your poetry and replies, you have an empathetic soul!

Loving hug,

Hi, Bri ~ a tiny poem, for you! lol

Thank you for reading and replying to my attempt at a rubaiyat. From time to time I try my hand at different poetic forms. MoonShadow is a master at poetic forms and I try not to miss any of his poetic works.

I'm pleased that you liked my choice of paintings to accompany my poem. I wish I knew  the name of the artist of the raven, otherwise, I would have given him/her their due credit.

Hugs to you! ~ and have a great day!

Ceinwyn ~

That painting by Waterhouse entitled "The Tempest" has inspired both this poem and my recent one entitled, "Carnal Sins". Perhaps this brooding painting will be the source of inspiration for a third one as well!

Arctic Wind ~

If writing in a different form sounds like "fun" to you, then perhaps you could search "poetry forms" on the net and give one of them a try. It seems to me that you have already tried your hand at writing a haiku.

Thank you for your sweet reply, AW!
