Between the forest and the sea,
Cut into the mountains
by sheer ingenuity,
A twisting highway
Winds it's way
Through intermittent showers
Of sea spray.

Fierce waves crash
Onto the cliffs below.
While above the road
Stand the sentinels
That guard the Oregon coast.

Stately they stand
In their forest finery.
Spear tips pointed
Toward the sky.
Defying the deadly
March of progress
That is creeping ever nigh.

As you travel
The intrusive highway
Beneath a sunny sky,
A playful breeze
Whispers ancient secrets
As you are passing by.

This is the sacred,
Primordial forest
Bravely facing the sea
And the wind.
Today it revels
In a rare day of sunshine
...And then the fog rolls in.

Many a time have I spent on those roads you write of.

A damn good read,so true in all its splendor.

Thank you.

Thank You, Seeker. I don't know how old you are but I remember Salem, Oregon in the early 50's as a child. Before the freeways. It was beautiful beyond description.
I wrote this poem about 14 years ago as we were traveling up the coast from California to Canada on vacation.

I'm from across the ocean, but my better half loves the side roads that line the cliffs of the Oregon coast.

So too do I now also.

Thank You, James
I posted a poem called "God's Temple" when I first started posting on this site.
That one was about the Redwood Forest in Nortern Ca. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful places on earth.

You just made me homesick for the Oregon coast!
But thank you, for the lovely memory.

a most fine 'write'!

I am particularly fond of the ending:

"This is the sacred,
Primordial forest
Bravely facing the sea
And the wind.
Today it revels
In a rare day of sunshine
...And then the fog rolls in."

serious, sustained applause!!

Thank you, Margherita
Have you ever seen the Oregon Coast? It was created for poets to write about.
