When my Hair was White

Because I had our daughter
At the age of thirty eight,
I’ve felt the sting of people’s barbs
And took it as my fate.

My hair mixed strands of white
With tresses of dark brown/
So before the day that she was born
I had to go to town

Some color in a bottle easily
Fixed my plight. But as the years passed
I left my hair au natural
And once again faced solicitous remarks.

Asked if mother was at home
By a sales man come to call
I said “you just lost the sale”
As I swiftly closed the door.

Through the years I bore the brunt of that.
I didn’t care a fig about what others thought.
But she heard it more than once
I was her “granny”. So once again
I sought
That elixir in a bottle
To try to change other people’s view

It worked and I was free to be the who I was.
Now I easily answer to my age as platitudes I get
When I say my son is nearing fifty eight,
I can smile when they say.” Oh my you look so young.”

Though I know it is false utterance
and really has no meaning;
It is better than the placative words
I used to hear.

Once at work I had let my hair go white.
And once again I had to face those dread remarks.
“I love to be served by older people “
Said one young man who came in the door

I wanted so to tell him “go directly to your room”
But instead I smiled politely
As he continued in that vein
The more he spoke the deeper
down
he
dug...
But I in  grandmotherly wisdom
Just had to give a verbal hug.

Over the years I have heard it all
And take it with a grin but I must say
that most of all I can’t stand the little “dearie’s”
That most men throw in “sweetheart” and all of that
As they try so hard to please.

I understand but that does me no good.
I do not need a hand to lift a little pen,
Or need to hear sweet words even when given with a grin.
I need a man to love me as a woman should be loved

For who I am and not because
I make them think of grandma
Whom they loved when they were young.

Awwww, people can be so cruel. Even grownups. I have known a few like that.

Bottom line.. we are women of all shapes, sizes, hair colour and skin colour and men.. well they have their own problems too! LOL

Be kind at heart....for everyone you meet has their own battle to fight.........

James and  Roniece, Thanks so much for your comments. I try to keep my sense of humor. When I get up to go to work I need a hot pulsating shower to get the kinks out. But I never tell. Don't you tire of hearing  all about everyone's little aches and pains? I do. And do not want to share mine. I prefer to let the younger people think we all age beautifully sans the problems we see all the others showing off, like life time scars of duty done. LOL "late"

a powerfully 'real', and effectively emotive 'write!'
[containing much wisdom and a 'feast for thought']

serious, sustained applause!

It used to be that diamonds were a girl's best friend but to some (myself included) the "bottle" is more important and necessary.  I can totally relate to this write!  Well done!

LindsayP and Honeybunch, Why thank you so much. I tried but I tend to get wordy. LOL there are so many more episodes that tell more of the story but that was enought to make the point I think. Blushing now. "late"

This was quite a read, dear "late", I can relate, I once tried to let them be ... but my daughter was the one who said it wasn't the right time yet. I have a couple of friends who wear their white hair with great elegance though. Elles sont les vraies dames!

One day ...

Enjoyed you much.

Love,
Margherita

Margherita, Thank you for your nice words. Appreciated. I once said I would never  color my hair and if I were not still working I might not do it. But if it changes people's perception at first glance it is worth it to me now. Sort of like women who use a manish sounding first name. Woody,Marty etc. It gives you an edge in business. When someone walks into the office and sees a woman instead of the man  they expected, it gives you time to show your worth while they reactivate their strategy.  jmo "late"

Oh I liked this as it was so different from some of the more 'usual' themes we can tend to focus on. Sad but also very interesting.

Thank you Illusive, Just a little humor.I think we all need that. Especially me. LOL White hair makes a statement and unless I could have an elegant style I'd look like a  frumpy old lady. The same with extra weight. People tend to judge  each other according to their own prejudices
so it is someotimes better to find a stopgap. . "Late"
