convalescent home

run
where do I run to wring
truth out of the flat obsequious husk
of a letter

that begins “mother is…”

truth clings
tracks me like dogs in the dark

I don’t want to hear them
bellowing their cold
triage

the hidden rage of it
beneath this desperate
“as much as will be possible”

like dogs
screened black under
a million leaves

leaves with names
like family
trust
guilt

competition
rivalry
hate

they hunt me
singing in discordant
whoops and yawps

I am
sick to death of it
my hand wills a loose board

anything
to slam them down

“for discharge on…..”

they tell me where
I will be too
when they close
and they will close

but the real threat
is mine
to see the sun’s Omega
even as it rises

mother mine
it waits me too,
did you not know

and I would rather
be run down on stones
still raging in the dark

than kenneled in a yard

better yet to be
a dog who chases
life until
my hunt song done I

die
still
howling

Ratleader,

The ache, the bitterness of the aging process...  You write it well.  Take care, good friend.

I'm a lucky man in many ways, including this one. Some things I write are about me, and some are partially so, but some also are written because an inspiration comes to me from "out there", some for friends, and some because I've seen a situation that moves me intensely.

My luck in this is that my mom's ok; but I have friends whose mothers aren't, and others who have been through the unluckiest times of all. This one's for them.

Poignant and thought provoking poem,
Ratleader. I'm glad it's not about your mother.

I don't know which lines move me most... these... or leaves with names... or the incredible ending!!

I'm glad this isn't your bitter cup to drink... You've captured the helpless rage superbly!

Ed, I'm writing this in tears...this touched me, especially since we just lost our mom, last Sat.
But within the rage of loss, there is much more, now, a great sigh of relief...

Our mom was here, at home for the last 12 years...and in the end, went into Hospice House, where the caregivers were extremely compassionate and tender with her.  It was her choice to go...she was brave and decided to discontinue her blood transfusions.  She was 90 and was loved by so many.

I know, she is doing well, and there will be a great hord of emotions to follow within the future, but when I feel the rage, I will try very hard, to be a kitten in her lap, feeling the love she bestowed in all of us, as she was the most caring woman, I've ever known...

Ed, your writing is amazing...always...

Love and many hugs to you and yours....
Lee J.

Ratleader, I was so excited when I saw GG's reply that I see I neglected to comment on this poem. It struck a hard core in me. I have never put a parent into a home.I do not know if any of my children have the reserve and stamina to keep me out of one. Therefore I have saved  and saved so that they coud hire a younger friend of mine should I ever need home help. If that is not good I prefer to leave this world. And I know positively that other older people I know share my point of view. Keep us in our homes where we need to be. Best to you Ed,'Late"
