Fred the Frog
~ Linda L. Dowd ~

When I was just
a girl of ten,
I knew this boy
whose name was Ben.

He only played
with his pet frog,
whom he had raised
from pollywog.

He cared not what
the kids all said,
he only cared for
his frog Fred.

He took his pet
each day to school,
even though
that broke the rule.

Fred could croak,
his ABC's,
and read Shakespeare
aloud with ease.

Ben was proud
of his small bud,
all green and slimy
and caked with mud.

One day wee Fred
got under foot,
and Ben did crush him,
with his boot.

He stood there stunned,
and horrified,
at how his friend
had croaked and died.

Next day his folks,
bought Ben a doggy,
to take the place
of Fred the Froggy.

He bought green paint
and sprayed the dog,
then taught it how
to croak like frog.

The froggy-doggy,
became his friend,
and this tall tale
has come to end!

.

This is GREAT!!

[the moment of grand 'comic relief' I truly needed this evening!]

I REALLY admire those who can do these wonderful humorous poems
and the effective/important "reality" writes...likely I can't do either...
I'm stuck being just a 'natural philosopher/impressionist-imager.'

VERY serious, long-sustained applause!!

I am SO glad that it is a tall tale and that is why I can enjoy it.  Unfortunately, I had a little worm (and it was truly bright green) for most of one day, and unfortunately when the bell went for home time, I slammed my French book (green-covered) closed, and was devastated to remember too late, that my darling little bright green worm was on the page from which I had been working.  I can still feel his pain and mine.

Oh, OWL, I wish yours was a tall tale, as well. I do so understand how you must have felt! That would have been especially traumatizing for a child.

Loving hug,

Linda

We have a couple of frogs in our water garden area and it's music to our ears when we here them croak. We also have a fox that comes to our back door every night to eat his snack that my wife puts out for him (or her) much to the disgust of our little dog Rozzie, Your a very versitile poet Linda
much enjoyed.

You have the first story in a a best selling picture book here.  Much cuter than some I have been forced to read over and over to a little one.  Have a go at it.  Joyce

Joyce ~

Hi, there! It's been awhile! So nice to hear from you! Thank you for the kind suggestion and your vote of confidence! For years I have toyed with the idea  of illustrating a book of poems for children. But life happened ~ and it didn't!

You have planted the seed in my mind once again!

Loving hug,

Linda

Alas, poor Fred is dead!

'Twas a sad tale, indeed. However, it did have a fairly 'hoppy' ending!

Hello,

Just wanted to say I loved reading your work. I thought the language was lovely and so different to what I usually read and indeed write. It's so refreshing.

Thank you.

Abena.
