Through the eyes of a child

Kids sometimes say things with wondrous appeal
And this true story has left me beguiled,
It’s a tale of true innocence concerning a meal,
As seen through the eyes of a six year old child.

A mother took her son to a restaurant one day
Where he asked her if he could say grace,
Then bowing their heads at the table to pray,
These solemn words that we all should embrace.

God is so great and God is so good,
We thank you dear Lord for supplying the food,
And if Mum buys me a cone I’d like to include
An extra prayer God, to show gratitude.

He finished by saying, liberty and justice for all,
Spoken with satisfaction, he concluded, “ amen,”
And then amid the laughter that folks couldn’t stall,
I heard this nasty remark from a spiteful woman.

That’s what is wrong with this world today,
Fancy asking God for a serve of ice-cream,
Why kids of today just don’t know how to pray,
Well that is the way to me it would seem.

Hearing this, the little boy burst into tears,
“Mummy, did I do it wrong, is God mad at me,”
“Definitely not,” she assured him, giving him a squeeze,
“God is not mad at you and he would surely agree.”

Approaching the table was a chap with grey hair,
Who then winked at the lad and quietly he said,
“I know God thought that was a wonderful prayer,”
“Do you think so,” asked the boy, as he nodded his head.

Cross my heart, said the stranger, in tones heartening,
Then in a loud theatrical whisper and wisdom supreme,
He looked at the woman who had started the whole thing,
Saying, “too bad she never asks God for a little ice-cream.”

“Some times a little ice-cream is very good for the soul
And it helps sooth one’s problems in a busy life style,”
At the end of the meal Mum bought her son a soft cone
And gave it to him with a kind loving smile.

For a moment or two he looked at the cone,
Then did something that she will never forget,
He picked it up slowly and then all on his own
Placed it in front of the woman with no sign of regret.

With a big smile on his face and as if to console,
He said, lady this ice-cream is especially for you,
That man said that ice cream is good for the soul
And a boost for your soul is long over due.”

Yes, "through the eyes of a child" ~ and through the eyes of a raconteur poet with a very old soul.

Your stories touch me deeply, LP. God bless you!
