EZEKIEL
By Frank Lee Jennings

Ezekiel was a mountain man
rare that day and age
couldn't stand the city life
seemed just like a cage

lived up in the mountains, yep
way back in the hills
shared his nights with saw whet owls
and wistful whippoorwills

shared a one room cabin
with an aging one eyed dog
had a blackened fireplace
for Oak and Hickory logs

Hunted wild game with his hounds
fished the spring fed streams
had a cleared spot on the flat
for corn n' peas' n' beans

Spent springs and summers workin'
on his little backwoods place
but came the fall was time to hunt
and hear the blueticks race

then winter'ed come and bring the snow
with howlin' sleet n' rain
while Zeke and Joe, the one eyed dog
mused at the window pane

the stack of firewood at the door
was mighty good to see
when ten below hung on for days
the fire was where to be

days and weeks of slate gray skies
while outside fetchin' logs
or drawin' water from the well
or tendin' to the dogs

then one bright day, winter'ed break
and snowdrifts start to melt
in early spring Zeke heads to town
to swap his catch of pelts

people all would stop and stare
at this peculiar sight
a man in buckskins totin' furs
in early mornin' light

Zeke would trade his winters' catch
for things he couldn't grow
then finger through the merchandise
guns, knives and calico

but soon he'd leave the settled land
and journey far away
a score of days and he'd be home
another year to stay

to live the life that he so loved
in virgin rollin' hills
n' share his nights with saw whet owls
and wistful whippoorwills

I enjoyed this write greatly, dear Frank. I love the mountains too, but not to such a degree of solitude ... I experienced twenty below and it was brrrrrrrrrr tremendous.

This character Zeke is beautifully described here.

Love,
Margherita
