in the shadows

In the soft gentle web of the morning rain
I drift again lightly held
far above the fertile plain of dreams,
as my thoughts run through the lives I've known,
the seeds I've sown reflecting in the sun of reason's light,
as daylight flaunts reality
it humbles me to see my steps
blown away to leave no mark upon the earth;

my burdens and accomplishments
my sad laments and all my joyous cries
carried off with wind's forgotten dust,
like all of us I am but a moment sliced from emptiness;

before this day is fully born
I will again have worn the languid mantle
woven from the fitful threads of age,
and in those broken slips of sleep
I seek the fleeting imagery
of loves I've known in this long self serving life,
sirens all escaped in time
reminding me
my greatest crime is memory
of choices I felt called upon to make;

while lessons fade before the shining light
of impatient dawn
I'm drawn to thoughts of every lady's face,
young girls just past the budding page,
goddess women
and the crones of age still call to me
in sleep again I'm free to feel their touch,
the joy I've grown to miss so much when I'm awake
captured here within unyielding bonds of age.

Oh, icebox, do you have a hankie? This is a wonderful, poignant write.
I think your voice will touch many of those who are approaching the age of memories ...
yet in the soul and in dreams youth is maintained.

I will keep this.

Love and hugs.

Well, the title made me snicker in the most unlady like way...

and then I read the words of wisdom, love, longing and resignation.

and I thought, yeah, old age does suck but at least it spends dinner and drink time with you first.

A deceptive title for a beautiful poem.

the crime of memory...

sneaky little buggers, those!

Too many miles away to count, and you always touch my heart.

I  can't single out  one favorite line, for I love the "all of it".

and I know what you mean "like all of us I am but a moment sliced from emptiness"

Laughing at Susan's reply, as the title gave me a giggle, but the poem....oh, an ache of understanding memory dust.

This ‘write’ is simply superb!

[and, I’ve previously held similar opinions
  of other works by this fine author!]

I am especially fond of magnificent
imagery such as:

"“impatient dawn”;

“the soft … web of the morning rain”;

“the fertile plain of dreams”;

Also, grand:

“the seeds I've sown reflecting in the sun of
  reason's light(!)”;

"it humbles me to see my steps
  blown away to leave no mark upon the earth(!)";

AND:

“I am but a moment sliced from emptiness”;

MOST serious, long-sustained applause!
[another 'poetic standing ovation'!!]

When you're filled up and can't hold it in any longer, you give birth to poetry that touches deeply...like this.

Memories, how would we ever make it through old age without them? Your poetry is a cut above, Icebox. I always anxiously await your next masterpiece.

Wonderful phrasing throughout this Icebox. I too, loved the title in contrast to the depth you explored in the poem itself. This was a wonderful read, much enjoyed your thoughts here.

Best wishes,
/Kit
