If it must end, how so? Does it end at physical death,
When the body stops?
Does it end only when creation falls in its inevitable black hole?
In its own grave?  And then
Who fills in the gaping hole?  Who?

After you chose to die I saw you buried.
I did not shed any tears then -- what for?
And after?  I did not bring flowers to the grave.
I never went to clean the weeds -- never even,
Never went to read your epitaph
After they put up the stone (I was told you got one).
Oh well, they say I'm cold.  There's a truism!
But don't we both know this is too often a harsh world;
A cold world
And those who stay in the cold are better preserved.
Would you disagree?  Though "preserved"
Is a harsh concept to accept.  Try.

It's not that I did not like you, you know.
(Of course you know, you just pretend not to)
But I saw no point in stirring up old feelings
Or tearing up old wounds
With shards of guilt.  I did what I could
While I could.  I could say, you know,
You never gave me enough time to get it right;
But who has the power to give another time?

And how would I know to get it right
If I did not know to get it wrong?
Certainly (I now realize) I did wrong by you
But in the end, did I not do right by wrong?
By not understanding; by not being there (for you)
I forced you to choose your own path.
It led to an early grave (they claim) but now
What do you say?
I have this one thing to give you:
A toast to freedom... From me.

Ooh Angry poem! I love angry poems and this one simply seethes. Such powerful words and emotions. I guess from the tone you were drinking when you wrote this well I raises me glass to you.

Cheers

powerful 'write'...v. 'real'!

(much to think about v. carefully in this one)

This poem reaches out and grabs the reader's guts and then twists them. It has a ring of truth to it and reads  as though it is based on your personal experience. If so, my heart goes out to you.

Riveting write, WW. That's all I can whisper at the moment, absorbing the impact of this on a cellular level, and understanding (knowing) why disturbing past dust seems futile.

WW and others, I am grateful to see this poem again, to re-read it thoughtfully and with appreciation, then stand back in respect. I would have posted a reply to it sooner, but in the presence of words this meaningful, this powerful and this well presented ... what is there to say?
