I tracked her down, ‘accidentally’ met and ambushed her in a lift -
steered the conversation to old school days and photographs.
I had to. It was my last chance of getting back the pieces of those years.

“Why do you need to see? They’re just black and white pictures,”
Then  - suddenly,  “Meet me at the Plaza Saturday, I’ll bring them. ”
She was gone, leaving me breathless with the suddenness of success.

Saturday – we met like waves on a shore, cheeks caressing briefly.
She slid five black and white matt prints and an address across the table and left.
Our hands touched briefly; cool - belying the intensity of the moment.

The memories came flooding back.

Gods! It was all there in my eyes, for the world to see
Year ten - front row, spotlighted - knees pressed tightly together holding in secrets.
Year eleven – missing, but not missed.

Year seven, smiling and carefree - it had only been a few months
How could I know it would damage me, or how long it would last?
I felt loved. It had been a long time since I felt that, not since dad number three left.

Year eight, I knew what was happening. It was harder to smile, guilt formed.
I built walls, to keep out dad’s enemies, but it kept out friends too. I looked lonely.
Sex in the dark brought no comfort. Soon I would be a woman. HE wouldn’t want me.

Already, he was looking at my sister…

Year nine, it started falling apart early - there were no smiles, anger filled me.
I kicked her for no reason.  Detention! And secrets told.
The teacher said I lied to get attention… as if!

I couldn’t breathe - couldn’t think and failed subjects I was good at.
I alienated anyone who got close – even remotely close-to-close, just in case something slipped.
It showed in my face and in my posture. I’m surprised no one knew.

I searched for signs that others had known… there were none.

Then came the running time, the burying time, the losing me time
I found pieces in corners when reflections stared back with hollow eyes and I grieved…
putting myself back together had been hard AND IT HURT!

Looking at the prints I saw another like me. It was her.
Gods it was there in her eyes too – in black and white.
All the pieces fell together. Secrets that had torn us apart now bind us.

a good commitee can decimate communication.

So many....sometimes I think every woman I call friend....and sometimes I think, every woman.

This tears my heart, in a way that kept me from reading it as a poem, even though as a poem it's worthy of anyone's reading.

Lynne, whether true or not, for some this is such a heartbreaking event(s) in life. I can only say your words have "touched" me and hope that this writing helps to heal~~
