True seekers look backward
As well as forward,
For they know,
That history is ever ready
To shed light on the future
With it's illuminating glow.
Sometimes while presenting
The simplest artifact
The past becomes our teacher
And sets us on the right path.

I am inclined to think
That as often as not,
There is more true history
In the remains of a clay pot
Than in the corrupted words
Of priests and kings.
For there is honesty and purity
In simple things.

Ida, I loved this historical and philosophical gem from your poet pen!

"There is more true history
In the remains of a clay pot
Than in the corrupted words
Of priests and kings."

As an aside, being an archaeologist had been one of my career aspirations. I think that if I had become one, I would have had your poem framed upon the wall of my office!

Big hug-o-love,
Linda

Linda,
I've always had an interest in archaeology, myself and do a lot of reading on the subject.

Thank You Lindsey,
I don't know about a philosopher but I am an observer.

Your poem speaks to me, even though I am not one for the past. The second stanza is so crisp and clean, one cannot help but to store its idea in thier mind. Thanks for that

..previous comments do give a strong feel of archaeology and science to your poem, but I feel it applies to almost everything we view. So true literally, and such a fine metaphor too (which goes for most truths!)

Oh, I love this.  I majored in Classical Civilization as part of my BA, and particularly loved Greek civilization as opposed to Roman, and very particularly loved the excitement of being able to identify the painters of Greek vases from their styles and managed to wangle a lot of that into the History syllabus that I taught to pupils much later - so I really, really "get" this!  Thank you, Ida, for taking me back.
