in the shadows

I have wondered,
in your early days of madness
when fear and sadness ran in acid rivers
cutting corrosion channels in your soul,
and you were fourteen and being trained
with no way out,
debased as local coin in a realm of denizens
looking to you as barter to get high,
did you think you would survive
living as a receptacle to the world
of wastrels,
burnouts,
any lost troll,
with enough testosterone to rise to the occasion?

Before the choice of turning time into defined pleasure units
available at higher prices suited to a social service
where tickets are marked up
to lull the sense of logic
in the rich among the willing and the wanton,
there was a child who slept with childhood's dreams;
I see behind your eyes sometimes
she hasn't died,
she feeds the haunted look of fear that flashes
as silently she screams from being captured
by your life back then,
and buried there
beneath bloody shards of terror and despair,
buried alive inside your memories.

I sometimes think that pain was created so that some poet or artist can turn it into magnificent beauty.  This is one of those times.  Thank you icebox for the experience of reading your poem, and thank you on behalf of "them" for your sensitive and explosive understanding.

Sad, sad story, one that might inspire a 700-word bestseller, or 'just' a very beautiful poem. Well done.

A haunting piece, Icebox. One that leaves you with something to think about.

I once looked into similar haunted eyes of someone I cared about, and I am so thankful that the terror has been replaced with peace and inner Light.

Your impassioned and articulate write has brought those memories back to the fore. There is always that chance that someone teetering on the edge can be brought safely back.

With time, may those memories dim.

Love & Light,

You see; you hear; you understand; and you   empathize. I wonder how you became so wise and how and why you see beyond...and then  are able to turn it around and cause   others to also ...sincerely, "late".
