History Lesson

The terrible rain
clattering on tin roofs
awakens the barn door
holding in its museum of air

Thunder trembles
opening a slant of light
onto the forgotten hoof beats
that long ago galloped across the meadows
of the stolen tortured countryside

In the rafters
time hides
in an abandoned thread of lace
laconic and agreeable
in the serene dust
almost indeed noble

I'm so pleased
that I didn't fall to sleep
before opening up a dream so soft
that I may reside in, deep...

I could hear the door creak,
and I could smell the dust.
I always enjoy your expressive writing.

Made me look around and wonder about the nature of things. Beautiful imagery.

History lesson, poetry lesson....both rolled into one. There's a flame in you, Martie, and it shines out brightest through the lines of your poetry.

I'm glad you wrote this, and that you shared it.

The tears are rolling down my cheeks for multiple reasons.  Martie, this perfect poem is soooooo you in all its beauty; compassion; reality; artistic, emotive and informative detail; and every word being le mot juste.  Thank you for it all.

So many times, I am stunned by your words Marti...and this was breathtaking.

Hauntingly beautiful, dear Martie!!

I had read this before, when I could not reply. It well deserves another round.

Love and hugs, beautiful poetess.

I'm so glad I peeked in here. Your words are so visual. I could clearly see everything...and smell the stale museum air.

Martie,

This is stunning work! Each line carries the weight of sadness with it.

Excellent!

I love this!  Am reminded that the past is all around and even tucked away in the "rafters".  Powerful write!
