His voice rang out
my blood ran cold
at the sound of silence
that echoed after
the question asked.

"When you are close
to the end of time
what message would you wish
to leave behind?
Think about it from now until then
you will someday hear this question
again."

My mind raced with possibilities
but the answer already coursed
through veins and into soul.

"There are some I will leave behind
that wished for me, happiness to find
but what they've never realized
is that happiness was already mine.

They have said I'm sorry
that your life's been so tough
but what they don't see
is that I've had more than enough.

The ups and downs
the rights and wrongs
have made me who I am
and helped me to be strong.

So when I'm asked that question
and when it's finally my time
I would want them all to know
that my life's been perfectly sublime."

The warmth returned
as his voice faded away
"You'll be ready." was the last thing
that I heard ole scratch say.

"In yearning for nothing, you will be free to enjoy what you do, free to see the patterns, free to hear the music in all things."
-Barbara Ann Kipfer

The very first time I ever heard
of Ol' Scratch was here in the blue halls...

but I knew immediately to whom he referred.

This is very well done, dear...
and there's a lot of common sense,
not to mention commonality, within
the lines.

Dear Donna, I have had that conversation with Death when I was told that it was up to me to stay alive until they could get me "on the (operating) table" ~ My conversation ended up lasting for three loooooong days!

Fortunately I survived the ordeal and came out with a brand new lease on life! Living each one as though it were my last!

Another fine write from you, Gentle Spirited One!

Enjoy your day to the fullest!

Loving hug,

Linda
