The Hill

THE HILL
It stood about 200 feet high
Against the blue Idaho sky.
"The Hill" seemed more like
A mountain to me then,
When I was a child of 9 or 1O
And living in "The Project."

Low income housing, 50's style,
How well I remember it still.
That collection of old army barracks
Scattered at the foot of the hill.

Most families of the project had children
....And little else
Providing many playmates
For my brothers and myself.

I remember long, cold winters there
When times were hard
And the cupboard was bare.
These memories seem to be
Fading with time
But the image of the hill
Still looms large in my mind.
...A haunting spectre of childhood.

I often think of that special time
When all we had was a hill to climb.
And I find that I'm able to recall at will
Each adventure we shared
When we played on the hill.
