It's night on the ocean
I'm going home
And it feels like I've never
I've never been gone

   ~ Carly Simon

once more for the island
sails trimmed
bow coming ‘round
gray
bottom up gray
sky and sea
droplets of home
showing themselves

so long
since soles have touched wet cobblestone
so long since salt air has enclosed me
told me I am loved
home

gumboots
rough around ankles
feet warm
dry
memories of this childhood island
take my hand
steady me

wind blows
my face grabs it
in passing
do you remember me
when I walked small here
when I lay in the gray of your embrace

wind smiles
whips my face around
says
you were always alone
always in over your head

now look at you
tall
still alone
still in over your head

yes
but I left him behind
came home alone…

good thing
the wind hums
I never would have recognized you

thomas wolfe was wrong
you can always go home

you just can't take certain people with you

Kate,

Sometimes you just simply capture me in your poetry.  I think a small part of me is left among the words.  Maybe that is what makes poetry so wonderful.  Maybe that's why we come back again and again.

Love this, just love it.

I literally get tingles when I read your poetry. You are in a league all your own with your style of writing. It is alluring and all-consuming! One not merely reads your poetry ~ they experience it!

~ So that I can remember how real poetry is written!

With love and admiration,

You know I felt this way visiting Nantucket a couple of times with Nan, and although I live in Vancouver, Canada, Cape Cod is my second home and it felt just like this!  Loverly!

A grand-fine ‘personal’ and emotive ‘write’!

[but, in many ways, also a wonderful
  “slice of everperson’s-life dejavu”
   impression]

I am especially fond of the
Twist on Thomas Wolfe ending!:

“thomas wolfe was wrong
  you can always go home

you just can't take certain people with you(!)”

Serious, sustained applause!!

Multiple complex emotions and images painted into a Kate masterpiece - what an experience!  This evoked intense and simultaneous pleasure and pain, as your work often does.  Lovely work!

I've been remiss in my reading...
how lovely to catch up with you...

and the last line...

OH, so true!
