Reflections Of One Sad Mistake

The daylight’s fading, quickly passing.
Dark shadows gather; where I amassing
Memories old, image unfaded,
Sit in silence, solemn and jaded.

I breathe a sigh. The task is draining.
There are no reasons, no explaining
What happened then; now warm tears fall.
From dreamlike state, I see it all.

I call your name, my own voice chilling,
It echoes out across the ceiling.
You answer not, no longer here.
Eyes blind by grief, I sit and stare.

Ten years have gone since fateful day
And still I sit here. Still I pray
The accident was just a dream;
‘Though I woke not despite my screams.

The knock, the uniforms, the words
Ears not believing what I heard.
You left, it seemed, moments before
The news of death beat on my door.

“A fatal crash, the driver drinking.”
I watched their lips move, never blinking.
“Just seventeen, oh God it can’t be!”
I start to fall as strong arms catch me.

The morgue so cold, I shiver knowing
You from your shoes, before face showing.
From depths of shock, I still deny it
Although my screams shatter the quiet.

The viewing, funeral, the grave.
Newspaper clips that I have saved.
Lines of students, heads bowed low;
Their names, your friends, each one I know.

One fateful moment, one grave day.
One drink too many took you away.
One driver jailed, one driver dead.
One sad mistake, I bow my head.

The daylight’s fading, quickly passing.
Dark shadows gather; where I amassing
Memories old, image unfaded,
Sit in silence, solemn and jaded.

I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S

Lots of emotions here...a fellow employee at work just got popped for drinking and driving...he already had to pay $2000. to a lawyer to get things started...I told him about green tea..."ITOEN"...even gave him a can to try...he didn't like it...but he's learning lessons...money is very important to him to him...James

Dear Ruth....you are so good at putting emotion into the beauty of rhythm and rhyme that you do so well.  This is sad indeed.  Thank you for reposting it.  A good day to be reminded of this, I think.
