The Curtain Is Closing

Is it an illusion, that summer is best?
Is north not still north and is west not still west?
Soon bright summer weekends relinquish the crown
But bask in the glory til leaves tumble down

The chirping cicadas in late afternoons
Majestic ascension of big yellow moons
As a concert of tree frogs is ready to start
And shrill cricket fiddles tune up for their part

The curtain is closing on hot steamy days
And everything’s changing in wonderful ways
It’s time to prepare both the heart and the mind
To bid a farewell and leave summer behind

I’ll drink in the images, savor the scene
Of flocks of black starlings, of geese on the wing
Of ritual happenings, seasonal rites
That baptize the mornings and bring on the nights

A sunset of orange and ruby red glow
Neat hay stacks in Amish fields lined in a row
The swift disappearance of beetle and fly
Sleek wing tips of summer fowl scraping the sky

A pond of deep indigo, meadows of gold
The mums of burnt umber, the days growing cold
Dry leaves kicking up in a strong gusty spin
A suede pad of rabbit foot burrowing in

Aromas of peaches and apples and more
A bin full of cantaloupes ripe to the core
A raisin pie set in the window to cool
A child climbing high on a tall kitchen stool

But even a child feels the change coming on.
And knows that the summer illusions are gone
There’ll be no regrets as the days move ahead
And the holly bush flutters in bright cardinal red

A wonderful write, dear Elizabeth. You succeeded in harmonizing what was and what will be, in this colorful "painting" that leaves little or no space for melancholy.

A keeper actually, to enjoy again, when Summer is gone ...

Love,
Margherita
