Fierce, the year dies
over the brittle hum
of the locust, in red wheat,
growing, give mourning doves
any sun,

and they grieve their song,
trembling in the syrinx
of throats too slim
to swallow the sob
held tightly
in its vehement desire to speak,

the eyelids close
on a wet, dark grave,
just beyond the road
moves its pale, gold sand
through pastures of coreopsis,
and so too moves, its noon
and purple moons, [silly rabbit]

the deaf swan
swims its swamps
in a damp attempt to sweat,
she dries. stillborn night
and drowns, [tricks are for kids...]
as the cicadas' patient sound
becomes endless.unrequited.waking.

these moments grow dense
and spread white paths of ashes
over deerskin palms, blood
cools to black, and pools
in these fists I close to rip
my own flesh down the seams,
and drown
these screaming mittens of blood,
lined in kitten_silk
deep.deep.deep

as the dying year,
in the cedar river of mirth, the water
so cold it stings going down,
straddles the ribs,
and strangles the breath
on lips that are the gouged blue
hue of algebra, low
in the fluid afternoon,

the calm
that could not keep
its eyes from the pale flesh,
on which wounds show clearly,
like words on a page, burn
the ink into the dark geography of dream,

and let it brood,
over the black field
of fairytale theorums,
written long hand, this~
the fiction of crescent limbs,
bent follicles in catskin, arch
to the grey touch of urgency,
see mind and body blur, burr
over the pierced blue riverbed,

as it purrs its omens
and the old year dies, fierce.

after a fall I get back up,
move on 'cause the past is the past and theres no tomorrow if remaining in still waters while the river flows on ~dsmith
