     Lost Pretensions

In rare and lucid moments
  like this…
(that herald remarkable change)
as pale ghost-horse clouds
ride the last summer wind
through the twilight-mist,
(with the soft thunder
  of scattering stars)
on this flaming cusp of
  Autumn’s splendor,
one thinks of what lies beneath
all grand facades and finely
  crafted ‘images’.
Would that we wore only
  tear-away shadows,
or could drop our rainbow-cloaks
  of vanity-paint...
for even a day,
to speak simply and clearly…
that which we truly feel and mean
  without pretension.
What and whom…do we really
  ‘know’…
not even ourselves!
