.

Still as yet
That pathetically arrogant
Walk of triumph down the street

All the gaudy colors
And jewels of the world
Could barely hide
What is so obvious
To the naked eye

But being
Civilized citizens that we are
We’ll all cheer if not bow
Though with a smile
Hidden in our empirical beards

As the lumbering goes on
Among the ruins
Parading the glories
Of ancient Rome

Or whatever nothing town
She grew up in

an intriguing metaphor, but you are great at that...

In fact, if I am to be absolutely honest, my first thought was "W hore of Babylon"...

but then, I do some odd twists and turns, so I could be completely off the mark.

Enjoyed, nevertheless.

SB,

Thank you

I chose "Rome" because just about every
populated state in the Union seems to have one.

Thanks again

It reminded me of the Titanic, actually! There was a scene where our baby-faced hero told a story about an old lady in his hometown, clad in her most magnificent jewelry every night, but unable to hide the first tears in her stockings as she waited for someone to worship her.
Pretty, melancholic, familiar write.
