Within an epigram of heartwood
Red cedar scents the letters I trace along line of skin
That curves from knee to hip as an arc of purloined minutes
Resinous in the cling of meaning brought from marrow
Into the copse of cultured sage
Where I season my tongue with yarrow
To stop the bleed of swollen dreams
Into a vellum bared to the indigo of soul

Had not the brace of juniper been filled
With the joy of laying upon the softest of quills
Discarded as the chickadee and finch found the poems
Carried upon their wings too much without escape
I would have surely found the burl of vowels
Stuttered across the nib of my thought
Bring me into the wet lipped eloquence
As might move the depths of me to also try
And write the phrases scribed upon
Bleached bones of paper and along the hollow
Of bole I have left
To burn upon a cairn of stone

She speaks to me still

As I am left this way upon knotted grain
a blend of how it feels to follow
Each mark punctuated upon the spine
With fingers seeking to pry shadowed verse
From the whorl and arch where sap flowed
And the hidden words thick with consonant sounds
of guttural language broken from branches twined
Softly in among the leaves

So I lay with her
To feel within veins a rhythm of movement

Slowly in
Slower out
Of breast pressed against me
Before she curled against the warmth
And asked my arm to root her there
A safety of deciduous breath brought into hues
Of winter fires smoldering along the demarcations
Of her soul

And mine
