Stand up, then as witnesses
in absence of a god:
Attest!
Mark the days with verses writ
swear an oath of vestige
whet
the promises unkept
(as yet)
do this!
while there is still time...

Count and score
each lie of mine
with scorn
by thorn
across the wrist--
mark the skins
as evidence
and purple lips
stained by the wine
in counterfeit of bliss.

Every effort I have failed--
weave them all in braid.
The vanities of curtsey
scream--
let none of these dissuade
pronouncement of the sentencing--
for every month of tithe, unpaid;
for each corpse I left to rot
inside a shallow grave.

For titles that I did receive
belief in every flattery
I wore as ermine on my robe--
relinquish them to my abode.

I pray, fair Luna
keep my cups
each of them unholy grail--
distractions of myself
as spent -
I found the task I cannot fail.

To tremble in humility,
in that I find my dignity.
These humble words that beg your trust
ashes, ashes for my dust--
an offering of "not enough"
befitting all my fruitless bluff
clumsiness and sport of grin:
I beseech you, take me in
and keep me there for all to find
the annalsong of thirteen chimes.

An omen, ill, to spot at noon,
(eternity is timelessness)
I'll gladly pace the limbus moon
tracing steps inherent in
the yearnings of my foolish flesh--
the imprints I cannot forget,
(and forever is too soon)
so spare me mercy depth of Lethe:
I'll feed the dogs that bark the moon.

* * *

Limbus of the Moon. In the limbo of the moon. Ariosto (in his Orlando Furiouso, xxxiv.70 ) says, in the moon are treasured up such stores as these: Time misspent in play, all vain efforts, all vows never paid, all intentions which lead to nothing, the vanity of titles, flattery, the promises of princes, deathbed alms and other like vanities.

OW. And thanks for reading--as usual I got suckered in by research. (Sometimes I think I write to distract myself from writing, if that makes any sense at all.)

But I wanted to write a quick note of appreciation before I rest me eyes today.

(If ANYBODY knows ANYTHING about Jewish folklore, Kabbalah, Mordachai and the number 36, links to articles would be greatly appreciated.)

My apologies for hittin' and runnin' today.

I'll be around--and around, and around.

Thanks again!

I loved this Karen...

every word, every meaning...especially the subtle ones.

I have to save this.

I knew I should have written about Camarina...

I guess it doesn't matter what I write about though, or how many references I have, huh? It's all gonna be cyberdust anyhow.

It's a good time to say "goodnight."

I really do have other things to work on--and yes, my mentor Jim, I'm hoping to produce something for you to read soon.

Thanks for reading, suze.

Love to all and so long.

"ashes, ashes for my dust--"

amazing piece Karen
that I can't stop reading

the number 36
the Lamed Vav Tzadikim
the 36 righteous people for whose sake G-d
does not destroy the world

I love the concept

this is all I could find...

and if you mean Mordechai who was Esther’s husband…

One of those poems that is better if grazed upon slowly as to linger on each subtle word rather than being devoured all at once. Enjoyed
