Escape artist hawks ride restless winds
soaring above towering whispering pines,
seeking summer's feast.
A solo cottontail sits on the ground,
surrounded by undulating heat ripples,
pretending he is invisible
to my sideways glance.
Lucky for him I'm not some sidewinder-type
snaking low in the brush
in some desert choreography,
to be caught in a life-death dance of chance.
Beneath my feet the sages brush,
coaxing thistles and dried yarrow
to scratch my legs mercilessly
as I motion to the cottontail, beware the hawk.
A young doe steps tentatively from behind the barn,
surveys her two-legged pasture mate with trepidation,
then sends her new fawn bounding
off into the nearby sheltering woods.
It's a scene repeated thousands of times weekly;
but for these eyes,
it will always be
the moment of purest poetry.

Immediately…from the title on…this ‘write’ is
most fine!

I am especially fond of:

“Escape artist hawks ride restless winds
soaring above towering whispering pines”;

“…sidewinder-type
‘snaking’ low in the brush
in some desert choreography(!)”;

and:

“beneath my feet the sages brush”;

If there really is such a thing as a poet’s
‘signature style’…I believe it is exemplified
by this write for this particular author?!

serious, long-sustained applause!
[a poetic ‘standing ovation’!!]
