Dark Longings,  Frigid Dreams

Golden leaves nestle in the chokecherry trees and capture my eyes
and I think I heard cranes among the clouds the other day.
While others may shudder with dread, I embrace the day
that winter returns.

I long for the curtain of cold which hangs heavy and low
as fingers of ice-fog tingle my skin.
Memories of summer hay days will dissipate
like a one-night stand who was mildly amusing,

but not all that good.
Do you know what I mean?

Hot nights and humid kisses meld
into gauze-covered yesterdays.
The incessant sun dance fails to entice;
instead,  I dream of the clarity of black and white.

My body yearns to feel the clutch of chill;
my eyes seek stars in a sky too bright at midnight hour.
For my world is out of sync until frozen air cracks into shattered kisses
and the snow squeaks under foot.

Sun dogs will stretch into the dusk of day
and beckon all to romp in their presence.

I embrace the day that winter returns.
Mountains, again, will glow in virgin white and prom-pink frosting
as black nights will be laced with strands of dancing dreams
called the Northern Lights

I long to taste the days of winter cold on my tongue
while hor frost coats my lashes mascara-thick.
My senses are churning deep inside, on high-alert, waiting impatiently
and my eyes are restless

longing for the day my winter returns.

---

Alison

I am especially fond of:

“I dream of the clarity of black and white.”;

“…my world is out of sync until frozen air cracks into shattered kisses(!)”;

“Sun dogs will stretch into the dusk of day”;

applause!

Great write, Alison.  It's a cold winter's night here in my part of the world so I'll dream it over to you if that's alright.

From a former Alaska resident mesmerized by winter's blankets and those rainbow dancing lights, I really enjoyed this read....from a 'safe' distance in PA.
