Tethered to the crumbling earth,
Eyes like fire singe the sky,
A stolid face besmirched with soot,
Amidst torment you long to fly.

Struggling against your chains,
Against your strength the links have bent,
The sun against your pallid skin,
Bolsters your life and death’s relent.

Silently traverse the sky,
The land below is noisome waste,
From your hair you shake the dirt,
And toward your freedom you make haste.

The warmth from the sacred sun,
Like the heat from mother’s hand,
The most addicting invigorant,
Will surely bring you back to land.

Such heat and comfort now ablaze,
Your wings corrode within the flames,
Descending quickly to the ground,
With only cruel fate to blame.

So high you flew at your apex,
Now you and the earth are one,
From the heavens you did fall,
From the purview of the sun.
