Under Ground

On the banks of flowing waters
Where we dreamed the dreams of youth
Little footsteps once had scrambled
From the darker shades of truth

Skipping through the rushing waters
Stepping barefoot over stones
From a life of degradation
To the dark of the unknown

Only sounds of splashing footsteps
Was their compass through the dark
On a journey marked with terror
On which brothers would embark

It was fear of separation
That could turn a black face pale
But the thought of liberation
Was the wind that drove the sail

They were innocent in wisdom
But they understood the stakes
And they knew their mother ‘s spine
Was made of bone that never brakes

So they followed in her whisper
Through the shadows of the night
Into tunnels carved by Quakers
Sympathetic to their plight

They knew nothing of those tenets
That had hollowed out a hole
Only fear of retribution
And the torture of soul

Little ears were finely tuned
To every peril in their flight
Any falter in the rhythm
Of the footsteps in the night

Little footprints on a riverbed
Small hearts that paced a stream
Echo through the falling waters
In a place we used to dream

Beautiful work!!! You've woven the serenity of the present with the perils that place once knew... and done so perfectly!
