Else Reliance? Or Self Reliance?

How much would we strive
to climb the next mountain
if we were always relying on another:
God?  The Government? The Boss?
to save, to protect, to pay the bills?

We think: pull me up - I slipped and fell;
carry me over when I am tired:
who hasn’t heard the story
of  two sets of footprints in the sand -
and learned the dis-empowering lesson
that when things got tough,
“Jesus” carried you through your mess?

I have learned that my grip as I climb;
my determination to carry on, see it through;
my own light shining in the darkness;
these are as weak as the folly in my mind
when I believe someone is always there
for me to rely on, even to use or to abuse;
someone to help me if and when my life
takes that inevitable turn for the worse!

Certainly we should accept any gift of ‘help’
when freely offered and well meant
but not expect one at every turn,
when we choose to break the rules of the game
or gamble with our reality.

To blame is a foolish enterprise of the ego,
but if blame I must use, let it be me
for I, only I, can decide my fate;
set the course for my life’s journey.

I go beyond the fearful whisperings of my mind
beyond the ego, the wishful thinker;
and in my true self, my spirit self
I conquer my space
and delineate it as I choose.
