one for the road

just one for the road
the lost promise of love
with nothing left to show
the sacred truth you lose
and never really come to know
another one for lost hope
and another one last one for the road

they’re closing the bar
a familiar patron yawns
the sun also rises
a short time until dawn
empty bottle of vodka
falls and rolls on the floor
dimming neon lights
leaving to find a hard liquor store

a song we once knew
on the radio plays
haunting my lost soul
more than I can take
now paying the toll
to cross a dark bridge
distant city lights glow
I’m staring down from the edge

no sound I can hear
against the hard falling rain
one last step I could take
ending all of this pain
It’s more than I can bare
too full of this load
here’s to you my lost love
one last one for the road

writer's note: he does not jump, he comes back from the edge and goes home...so don't ban the poem, its about lost hope not a lost life....Mark

Mark, it is a sad post my friend, but indeed a great place to escape and speak from the heart, may love find you, the bottle have less appeal and the edges be fenced, enjoy your day and love to come.

Hi, Mark! I was pleased to read "he" in your "writer's note".

A sad story ~ well told!

In reality, there are many who have one for the road and then end up 'smashed' on it.

You are quite the raconteur!

Hugs to you!

Linda
