standing on a shadow's lace

Voice of My Own

grandma’s blue hair sits in the porch swing
yellow apron ruffles in the summer wind
white red rimmed metal colander lap perched
breeze found bobby pin slips letting hair fall
reaches up to reclaim normal Saturday of
shelling peas for Sunday chicken dinner
brown chain rust creaks warming up in
peas clanging against metal in purple sound
I sit wall backed to the porch cool afternoon
as she begins a pure white note church song
I join in as natural as breathing next breath
voice of my own learned to harmonize early on
before long we are in a porch concert
singing loud on this my favorite song

“I come to the garden alone”
“while the dew is still on the roses”
“and the voice I hear”
“echoes on my ear”
“the sweetest sound “
“ I knoooooooooooow”

she started the songs of my soul the poetry of heart
teaching me my voice as she says
“The Old Rugged Cross”

*** my favorite hymn “In The Garden” author unknown

thanks mamaw this …is for you

time and miles away from it

oh Helen

Mississippi memories are not all that different from Georgia memories
and this had special meaning for me

I am glad I did not miss it

I can hear the voices clearly

Helen,

And now I can see you
as that 7 year old little girl
which does no harm

Love your childhood memory stories, H!
Do more!

(Don't you wish we could hear those departed voices one more time?)
