Much is said about the soul:
who really knows what that is?
Is it part of us that is eternal
leaving the body at death
to go wherever
according to beliefs, hopes and fears?

Why do we say, I have a soul?
Why not, I am a soul?
A good question could be,
Why do I need a soul?
Another good question would be,
Does this soul possess me?

Perhaps the soul is very real,
something given at birth
or at conception?
But is it a gift or a curse? An implant?
Something that tracks our path in life,
that records every thought, every move,
something subject to recall
when our time is up?

Who then, would be the owner
of this ubiquitous soul?
Some controlling divinity
with nothing better to do
than count the hair on your head?
The God of bean counters?

If we possess such a thing
or are possessed by such--
a much more likely scenario,
perhaps it is time, high time
to just hand it back to the owner:
thanks just the same,
but no thanks.  I’ll go it alone now.

Well WindWalker, I can tell you that a soul is what gives the body life, just as the mitochondria is the powerhouse for the cell.  The owner of souls is indeed a divine entity who is God or Jesus Christ.  Now, your ending seems frightening since you say "but no thanks.  I’ll go it alone now."  To me it's like asking God to kill you, or no longer wanting him to protect you.

"Why do we say, I have a soul?
Why not, I am a soul?"

We say we have a soul because it keeps the body alive; after the soul leaves, then the body is dead.  That's why we humans are very different from the animals... we have a soul, that's what seperates us from the animals.

I believe that you are a soul, because a body on it's own can not live.  We only  have these physical bodies to sustain our time on Earth, after our time is expired we begin eternal life or death.  This life is a dream.  The soul is forever,  but the body is temporary.

"Another good question would be,
Does this soul possess me?"

I don't believe that the soul possesses you, but instead works with your body as one.

"Perhaps the soul is very real,
something given at birth
or at conception?"

Yes, the soul is very real, and given from God.

"But is it a gift or a curse? An implant?"

A soul is definitely a gift because it gives life which is also a gift, I do not believe it is a curse nor an implant because it's natural.

"Something that tracks our path in life,
that records every thought, every move,
something subject to recall
when our time is up?"

Yes, a soul does all of the above.  Your soul reflects on your actions or deeds.  What you do on this earth determines the purtity of your soul.

"Some controlling divinity
with nothing better to do
than count the hair on your head?
The God of bean counters?"

Well God was lonely, so he created us in his own image and likeness.  However, he is not controlling, he gives us free will, which is why the world is the way it is today.  God could've remade the world hundreds of times if he wanted, but instead he allowed what happened, to happen.

Wow, seems like I've wrote a lot here, hmmm... hadn't noticed.  Well I hope this answered some of your questions.  Nice work.

Peace. Love. Forgiveness.

Caught up in this earthly body it is hard to understand the value of the soul...
I wouldn't want to die without one...James

I suppose it should be rather comforting that there is someone so 'Gifted' with such certainty on these matters!

WW - I've asked myself the same question and, as usual, have enjoyed your ponderings.

WindWalker,

You bring up some very good questions that many people may not think about. It makes the mind start working for an answer. I am new to the site and very impressed.
Great Work
