Young Soldier

Young soldier with ancient eyes
Speaking over silent cries
Who is there to ease your fears?
Offer you solace? Wipe your tears?
So far away you had to go
There are things you need to know

You protect my basic rights
I have freedom for which you fight
Few decisions you can make
Yet you give so I can take
Most so young and far from home
Lost in longing, so alone

Young soldier with weary face
Perhaps you feel out of place
Growing older beyond your years
Dodging bullets and hateful sneers
Do you fear those who are blind?
Judging you with thoughts unkind

It is hard to turn the other cheek
Easier to hate those who speak
Against what they do not know
How could they when they didn’t go?
We can’t share what you have seen
We can’t picture where you’ve been.

Young soldier sent far away
For your return we all pray
We thank you for your sacrifice
You fight for our American life
We can never repay the debt
But I promise I will not forget.

Editorial Plea:

Please, do not allow our soldiers to be forgotten when they return home.  They need recognition that all wounds, even those that can not be seen, need to be treated.  They need our support – and for us to demand that they receive the care that they require and deserve.  They need us to call upon our elected officials and demand that VA and the military hospitals do their jobs.  Their mission, and responsibility, is to take care of our soldiers ~ even when they have returned home.  It should be the mission of us all.

this brings ya to tears...in the autumn of my life, I now realize, wars are not always the answer...and that isn't religion talking...

God bless you for this....

aziza, you know how close to home this hits for me.  You've captured the essence of feelings that I've been spoken to by so many soldiers.  I am once again amazed at what you can do with words.

always your friend,
Nysa

This is the poem that I wish I had written years ago when you asked me to write one.

I love you.
