I miss mannequins,
they used to be so real.
She in her red dress, heels and hose,
and glossy red lipstick.

He in his crisp suit
with polished shoes
and painted hair, looking
slightly buff from working out.

They would whisper in the windows
'till shadows lengthened and stores closed,
inching ever close together
holding hands until dawn.

Next season would find a small boy
with the grouping in the window.
A well behaved child
wearing one of those flat hats.

These days mannequins are abstract forms,
armless, headless, legless
flat torsos made of wire or fiberglass..
They might as well be coat hangers.

If they were ever going to reproduce
it's too late now..
I miss REAL mannequins.

Something like
"Well, maybe next year . . ."
as a last line

I really loved this poem.  How about trying it without the last line and just let it end with the second to the last line?  It's very good.

I also remember real mannequins, and so many other things have fallen by the wayside and become impersonal.
