in the shadows

It has been too long
since I have seen that look,
the hollow look,
the look of eyes having seen
too much too young,
eyes starving,
opened in
to a soul cut deeply,
scarred,
tattooed and scarified
in vain attempt to be immune
to dregs of memory,
carrying the weight
of a child's dream
shredded past the point of terrified,
the weight of death selected,
and then chosen
as the path of least resistance
in a moment of survival;
we are now too old
you and I,
too hard,
too familiar with what it means
to die or choose to live;
I cannot hold you as a child,
cannot pull you back through the veil,
cannot bring you tears of sacrifice,
cannot jolt awake the child's taste buds
for delight in life,
so all that's left for me
is hoping that you see
you are not alone,
I too carry a debt in kind,
I understand,
and for what it's worth
I wish you well.

It’s strange
When veterans exchange
Meanings those around
Don’t understand

See Ya later Mack

Hope to see you

Maybe we feel with emotions that are parallel ~ maybe we see with eyes that have cried over different/yet similar images ~ maybe we feel from a different history ~ but maybe it is a history that still links us with threads of compassion.  Maybe this is one of the most beautiful, moving pieces of writing that I have read on these pages. Maybe - no, no maybe about it.  It is.

I can't pretend to comprehend this particular haunting--but you reminded me of a friend who would come to visit me when I lived near the wood.

He'd stare into the trees for hours--and for once my curiousity did not beg a question--

I didn't wanna know what he could see. I just let him be when he was like that, and made sure his beer was cold.
